A 'Me Too' hashtag campaign which sees women sharing their experience of sexual harassment and assault is gaining momentum online.

On Sunday, actress Alyssa Milano tweeted a note that read "Suggested by a friend: If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote "Me too" as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem."

"If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'me too' as a reply to this tweet," she wrote.

After Milano posted the message to her Twitter account, an onslaught of women - some famous and many not - tweeted "Me too" and shared their experiences.

Women in the industry that responded included Will and Grace star Debra Messing, X-Men star Anna Paquin, Gabrielle Union, Lady Gaga, Westworld actress Evan Rachel Wood, Insecure actress Natasha Rothwell, Rosario Dawson and One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush.

Some simply wrote the two words, while others used it as an opportunity to share stories about their abuse. Men, and trans women and men, also shared their stories. #MeToo is trending on Facebook as well as Twitter.

The trend comes in the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Milano’s Charmed co-star Rose McGowan has also been vocal on Twitter following the revelations.
