We're well used to hearing stories about cyclists taking banned substances in order to gain an advantage but we have to admit this new method of cheating is quite innovative in comparison.

The42.ie are reporting that Femke Van den Driessche, a Belgian cyclist has been banned for six years by the UCI after it was discovered that she was hiding a motor in her bike seat.

The motor was detected by a new scanner employed by the organisation to catch sports cheats.

The magnetic resonance scanner used by the UCI “quickly detects motors, magnetic fields and solid objects concealed in a frame or components,” the federation statement said.

The motor in Van den Dreissche's bike was “concealed along with a battery in the seat-tube. It was controlled by a Bluetooth switch installed underneath the handlebar tape,” the statement added.

All of Van Dreissche's results as far back as October of last year have been annulled and she has been ordered to return all of the medals and prize money she earned in that time. In addition to that she has been fined 20,000 Swiss francs (€18,180).
