There's no time like the present to get yourself down to Galway, the city that offers more by way of culture than most.

Whether you're off for a weekend with a group friends, with big plans to tear it up, or you'd rather keep it low-key with your other half, here we take a look at some of the best things to do in G-town, especially over the coming month.

1. Running for 36 years now, Galway Arts Festival has established itself as Ireland's leading arts festival and, not only that, it's also touted as one of the most successful arts enterprises in this country. Once again this year promises a whole range of exciting events from theatre to music to comedy and spoken word. If you find yourself at this 'creative collision on the edge of Europe' you won't miss it. On now 'til July 27th.

2. If you're planning a trip to Galway for the August Bank Holiday Weekend, you're more than likely heading to the Galway Races. If you'd forgotten it was on, get booking. A stellar opportunity to get dressed up to the nines and have the absolute craic, there's no event quite like it and, since its inception, has become known as Ireland's leading sports festival. This weekend gets bigger by the year so if you've yet to get your ducks (or should we say horses) in a row, we suggest you do it ASAP.

3. If it's a slower pace you're after, a trip to The G Hotel is always a safe bet, regardless of the time of year. A massage here and a dip in the super stylish tranquility pool will cure whatever's ailing you. What's more, you'll be hard pressed to find a bed anywhere in the world that's as comfortable as The G's.

4. A stroll down Shop Street and Quay Street goes without saying. Get some live music under your belt at The Quays or Tí Colig (Taafe's is always good for a seisiún too), a Guiness at The Front Door and some mussels and chips at McDonaghs.

5. Take in the market on Church Lane. It's been running every weekend for what seems like donkeys years and has earned itself a great reputation for its massive selection of food and locally made crafts. Who doesn't like a stroll through a market? Nobody.
