Irish people love their dogs. For so many people, the idea of going on holiday but leaving their dog behind is unthinkable. It's leaving one of the family behind, when the trip could never be the same without them. However, finding accommodation that caters for canines and humans alike can be tricky. You want to find somewhere that offers luxury and relaxation, but will also have all the facilities that a dog requires. But we've done some research and put together a list of hotels that we think will fit the bill, and give you and your pet the break you both deserve.

The Dunloe Hotel, Killarney, Co. Kerry
At the Dunloe, luxury treatment is not reserved for humans. When your canine companion arrives they will be greeted with treats and toys, to help ease them into the holiday mood. The hotel offers two accommodation options for dogs; either their in-house kennels or their pet-friendly hotel rooms, which come equipped with a doggy bed, and food and water bowls. However, your dog certainly won't be stuck indoors for the whole trip as Killarney has plenty of pet friendly activities that can be enjoyed by all. You'll be able to explore the Killarney National Park and the lakes, some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.

Rathmullan House, Rathmullan, Co. Donegal
The owners of Rathmullan House are themselves dog owners, and understand how hard it can be to enjoy your break while your dog is left at home. That's why they are more than happy to allow pets in their hotel, and make sure they are well looked after. They offer a separate room for their four legged guests, (adjoining the regular hotel room) which contains a bed, space for eating and drinking and a door leading to the hotel garden. To keep your dog busy during the day, you can explore the hotel grounds, visit Glenveagh National Park and discover the beauty of the Lough Swilly coast.

InterContinental Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
Finding somewhere that accommodates pets in the city is always hard, especially if it's for a short-term stay. The InterContinental in Ballsbridge does however accept pets, albeit with a few restrictions. They only allow small and medium dogs, and they must not be left unattended in rooms. The hotel is close to Dublin's Herbert Park, which offer plenty of space for walks, while still being near the heart of the city.

Tankardstown House, Slane, Co. Meath
Tankardstowns House offer a special VIP (Very Important Pooch) package for anyone planning a getaway with their dog. It is the perfect place for both human and pet to unwind for a weekend. The courtyard cottage suites open onto the hotels walled-garden, giving dogs a secure outdoor space to enjoy. When you're ready to explore further, there is 80 acres of woodland nearby. That will allow you to build up an appetite, which you can satisfy in one of the three on-site eateries.

The Twelve Hotel, Barna ,Co. Galway
The Twelve is boutique hotel that both you your dog will love. You have the beach on your doorstep for walks and swimming, but Galway is only fifteen minutes away if you want to explore the city. The staff at the Twelve will welcome your pet with a goodie bag containing a toy and treats, and will provide food and water bowls for your room. They also have a nearby pet concierge service which offers a fabulous doggie grooming service that includes dog-brushing or shampooing to special doggie facials and even breath-freshening treatments. They also have dog walking and dog sitting services should they be required.

Gregan's Castle Hotel, Ballyvaughan, Co.Clare
Gregan's Castle Hotel is located in the heart of the Burren, and has previously welcomed JRR Tolkien and Seamus Heaney as guests. There are multiple walking trails through the Burren for you and your dog to explore, or you could head over to Cliffs of Moher if you feel like venturing further afield. The hotel itself provides ground floor rooms with garden access for anyone staying with dogs, so there is easy access to outside space.

Before booking, it’s a good idea to check with each hotel about their exact pet policy. For further information and inspiration for planning your seasonal break, please visit www.discoverireland.ie or find Discover Ireland on Facebook #thisisLIVING.
