New York’s Trisha Brown Dance Company's showcase production in The Abbey Theatre screams New York Contemporary Dance. Comprised of five pieces, ranging in date from 1971 to 2011, the show itself serves a contrasting mix of Trisha Browns talents in choreography, offering up tongue-in-cheek humour in the form of Spanish Dance, beautiful scores and movement in Les Yeux et l’âme, and bold cinematics in For M.G.: The Movie.

In a time when justifying arts funding is becoming more and more of an issue, it's refreshing to see art performed for the sake of art and more importantly, when it's done right. Trisha Brown Company's manifesto performances evoke that escapism that is all too rare in productions at the moment, taking you away from the city and thoughts of your day and make you feel like you could walk out the stage entrance and be in any lustrous foreign cosmopolitan city. Each performer in the company is stunningly accomplished, with each individuals' personality subtly coming out in their motions without overwhelming the piece itself, all the while staying clear of the mindless clone-like performances of a corps de ballet or similar contemporary pieces. Creative and beautiful variations in lighting, staging, sound design and costume truly mark the show as artistic expression in its highest form, and one that will be sorely missed from our shores when it's gone.
