Shane Gillen | Late Night Magic | Sugar Club

Words: Caroline Foran
Move over Keith Barry (well OK, we're still big Keith fans, so perhaps just nudge over ever so slightly) there's a new illusionist in town and his name is Shane Gillen. Say it out loud, get familiar 'cause it's a name you'll be hearing a lot more of soon. Kicking off in The Sugar Club tomorrow with his own tailored event, Late Night Magic is a show not to be missed. We've seen what this guy can do with a deck of cards, among other things, and believe you me, it's freaky!
A regular feature at the hottest events in Dublin, Shane is no stranger to prestigious performances having strutted his stuff for a whole rake of A - list celebrities including Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, 50 Cent, Faithless, Kelsey Grammer (that's Frasier) and then a few stalwarts on the Irish scene - man of the moment Bressie and those pesky Rubberbandits. Oh and did we mention he performed and blew the socks (or ridiculously oversized hat) off the Queen of pop, Lady Gaga herself?
Launching tomorrow, Friday the 13th at Leeson Street's prestigious Sugar Club, Late Night Magic is an event that will run monthly, alternating acts and performers with each new show. Designed to engage an audience with parlour, caudeville, street and stage magic in a way that remains intimate, humorous and memorable, this may well turn into one of the post talked about events in Dublin. No one trick ponies present here!
So if you find yourself unsure how to spend your Friday night, we highly recommend you encounter the wonder that is Shane Gillen. Cynical though some of you may be, with an evening in the presence of this young chap, you'll be singing The Monkee's I'm A Believer the whole way home. And if his peerless skills aren't enough of a draw for you, I may also inform you that you'll be greeted with some champers upon arrival. After knocking back the bubbly you'll be welcomed to take seat in the candle-lit auditorium where you can kick back and enjoy the on-stage performances.
Throughout the evening, guests can also find themselves in the Parlour Room. This is the place to be to see one-on-one close-up and intimate performances by the entertainers. Patrons can sit around the parlour table and even learn some of the secrets of magic. Games of 'Beat-the-magician' will be played at various intervals throughout the evening where guests will be encouraged to guess how the trick works or perform a trick for themselves, if they can do it - they'll win a cocktail named after the magician they have just beaten.
And where there's free bubbly there's often a competition of sorts: FIND THE LADY: There will be 5 'Queen of Hearts' cards hidden within the venue. Find one of them and automatically find yourself in with the chance of winning €250.
Tickets on the door - non presale.

Here he is charming the pants off Bressie. Figuratively. And below is a video of him with none other than 50 Cent! Holy Moses!
