Preview | Playboy of the Western World at Smock Alley

After many years of renovations on the building, the newly opened Smock Alley Theatre is steadily building up an impressive programme. The maiden production, PanPan's A Doll House, was quickly followed by She Stoops to Conquer produced by the theatre’s resident company Smock Alley Players, the two highly contrasting shows kicking off an eclectic mix of plays that continues with the opening of Synge’s Playboy of the Western World on the 10th of July. The second production for Smock Alley Players sees artistic director Patrick Sutton at the helm of an eleven strong cast as they bring the rugged terrain of Synge’s West of Ireland to Temple Bar. Muiris Crowley assumes the role of the allusive Christy Mahon, the playboy who wins the affections of Amanda Coakley’s Pegeen Mike with his lofty tales of bravery and vengeance. Synge’s perfectly paced drama flits between comic rural Irish moments and high energy ribaldry, making for a highly entertaining hilarious night at the theatre. After many recent high profile stabs at this classic, the Old Vic’s late 2011 production for one, it will be intriguing to see what this burgeoning theatre company will do with it on the newly laid boards of Smock Alley when the play opens on July 10th.

  Great production of this irish classic...vibrant, polished and v entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyed it all. Great actors, couldn't pick one out as being below par... lovely venue too!
