OUR HOUSE - THE MADNESS MUSICAL
JUNE 15 and 16
Few bands have a back catalogue rich enough to mould a musical around, but Madness, the 1980s ska group, is certainly one of them. Their high energy, pop-tastic brand of chart-topping hits paints the backdrop to Our House - The Madness Musical, which comes to Dublin's Olympia later this month.
It's a show in the vein of other groups who've taken a similar path, notably ABBA, with Mamma Mia, and Queen, with We Will Rock You, although the latter was much less well-received. In contrast, Our House was released to critical acclaim in London in 2002, winning several gongs, including a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical. The show features over 15 of the group's top 20 tracks, including the irresistible Baggy Trousers, the quirky Driving in My Car, and of course, the classic, Our House.
So what else can we expect? Well, those upbeat tunes move the story along at a frenetic, fast-changing pace. The plot focuses on Joe Casey, who tries to impress a girl on his sixteenth birthday by breaking into an abandoned building site with her on their first day. The police arrive, and then the story evolves in a 'Sliding Doors' manner, with the audience watching the Good Joe, who stays to face the music, and the Bad Joe, who flees the scene. This production also features musician and radio presenter, Tom Dunne, who will be making his theatrical debut, and, along with the rest of the cast, giving up his free time so that all proceeds go to suicide prevention charity, Console.ie.
Along with the excellent music, Our House also won plaudits for its fantastic choreography, witty script and spectacularly fast quick changes.
Tickets are now on sale for this TheatreworX Production, which will be shown in the Olympia on June 15 and 16.
Tickets €28.50 including booking fee
