LILIES: or The Revival of a Romantic Drama | The Teacher's Club

Having secured the prestigious Intercultural Dialogue Award in 2011's Dublin Gay Theatre Festival, the collaborative powerhouse of Greenwich Theatre, Wild Oats Productions and City Lights Theatre Company have returned to this year's festival hoping to keep riding along the crest of the wave they created last year. The previous year's award winning offering from these companies, The Temperamentals, told the story of two men determined to champion Gay Rights at a potentially hazardous time in history and, with the same core values at heart, LILIES: or The Revival of a Romantic Drama addresses the themes of family acceptance of sexuality, gay marriage, religion and, underscoring all these, tolerance.

Lilies, by Canadian Playwright Michel Marc Bouchard, is the story of a complex relationship between a Bishop and a prison inmate, one which dates as far back as childhood and is shadowed with betrayal, deceit, heartbreak and denial. Simon Doucet has seen the last 40 years of his life pass by behind bars due to a tragic and complex series of events, which ultimately led to the death of a loved one. Now, all these years later, he has summoned his old friend Bishop Jean Bilodeau to his dismal enclosure, in the hope that a confession from the Bishop will enable him to redeem his reputation.

The Irish premiere of this enigmatic, somewhat twisted love story, is directed by Joseph C Walsh and will take place at The Teacher's Club. On Parnell Square. Even if these accomplished theatre makers fail to match last years award-winning glory, the internationally acclaimed Lilies is bound to provoke, engage and move.
