ABSOLUT Fringe 2012 | The Cockroach and The Inventor | Macnas
Star Rating: 4/5
Venue: The Civic Amphitheatre
Review by: Aoife Ryan
In a nutshell: An eccentric inventor has created his best invention yet, a living giant cockroach, and better yet, it has reproduced. However, its crazy offspring will not be tamed by the inventor, leading to mayhem.
Best for: The Kiddies
Not for: Old grouches
The Macnas productions have returned with a family-oriented show called The Cockroach and The Inventor. Set up in the outdoor Civic Amphitheatre and lasting only thirty five minutes, it is bound to maintain even the most hyper child's attention. The most striking features of the show are the props and set design. In the middle of the arena a large cockroach model with two costumed operators sits in wait for the action to begin. After a quick introduction by one of the clown scientists, the inventor rushes through the crowd and begins the story of how he made the giant creature and its baby. What really thrills the young audience is the interaction and participation aspect of the show, as the inventor and his baby cockroach constantly run through the crowd, playing with audience members and cajoling a few into the arena pit.
Both of the main characters are so entertaining and good humoured even the adults don't seem to mind being dragged on stage for a quick dance or marriage ceremony, as it so happens. In particular the baby cockroach is the perfect concoction of madcap theatrical jokes more directed at the adults, and childish excess and silliness every kid will enjoy. A great daytime activity for young families.
