The past month has seen acts as diverse as Beck and Billy Idol, Kodaline and Christy Moore, Ellie Goulding and Status Quo entertain crowds in Cork – but this year's Live at the Marquee gig series finishes with a bang tomorrow when Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds take the Leeside stage.

To mark the occasion, we're picking 8 of the best penned by the one-time Oasis man – both as a solo artist and with his former band. Mind you, he might not play them all tomorrow, but we can always hope.

1. 'Live Forever'

It's a bit lyrically simplistic – mind you, it's not the most musically complicated song ever written, either. Still, there is no denying the sheer force of this song, particularly given that it was on Oasis's 1994 debut and still holds up, 21 years later.

2. 'In the Heat of the Moment'

A cracking number from Gallagher's most recent HFB album. It may not be revolutionary, true, but it showcases the man's ability to write big, muscly rock tunes with great choruses.

3. 'Don't Look Back in Anger'

Taken from '(What's the Story) Morning Glory', one of the finest British guitar albums ever (yes, it is better than Definitely Maybe.) It proved one of Oasis's most enduring tracks

4. 'Cast No Shadow'

One of the finest cuts from What's the Story.., this tune was written about Richard Ashcroft, lead singer of The Verve and friend of Noel's, who dedicated it to his "genius". It's a beautiful sentiment – written before The Verve made it huge and when Ashcroft despaired about his music going unheard – with a great melody, too.

5. 'The Death of You and Me'

Another HFB number – the first to be released from their 2012 debut, actually – it launched Gallagher's solo career with no little circumstance and a healthy helping of pomp, too. This could easily have been a track from Oasis's later albums (not sure if that's a good thing or not, mind).

6. 'The Masterplan'

Even if you'd been previously indifferent to 'The Masterplan', watching the 1996 Knebworth performance of this track would have changed your mind. It was a 'moment' for the band who were at the peak of their powers at the time.

7. 'Talk Tonight'

A song that is regularly hailed as one of the finest that Noel Gallagher has ever written, and with good reason. These are the kind of songs that he excels at writing. It was allegedly inspired by a period during a US tour with Oasis in 1994, when he temporarily walked out on the band without telling anyone and travelled to San Francisco to stay with a girl he'd met on a previous tour. She talked him out of quitting the band, and he even got a great song out of the whole experience.

8. 'She's Electric'

File with 'Live Forever' under the 'not the most profound lyrics ever, buuuuut…' label. Still, this is a great little indiepop song and if you don't find yourself singing along to this tune, you're a cold, cold person.
