Sony have reportedly drawn up a wish-list of directors they hope will consider helming the proposed reboot of Spiderman, after Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi bailed from the proposed fourth film last week.
According to Deadline Hollywood, James Cameron, David Fincher, Wes Anderson (!) and Marc Webb are the names on that list. First off, James Cameron isn't going to take this movie on straight away for a 2012 release. And I really can't see him shooting a high school set Spiderman film, either. Fincher is a definite possibility, and he would be my first choice to take the franchise; but again, he's a top drawer director, and Sony would have to bounce from of the beat of his drum. Anderson is intriguing, if highly unlikely, which leaves Webb. Fresh from directing indie hit (500) Days of Summer, he's also helmed a bunch of excellent music videos, and would be a hugely encouraging choice.
Whatever happens, it has to happen fast; Sony want Spiderman to be their tent pole summer blockbuster in 2012, and a director needs time to develop the material properly. A good director needs a lot of time.
