Lorde found out first-hand the tricky situation that artists find themselves in when they announce gigs in Israel when she cancelled her planned gig in the country last year.

The Kiwi star was due to play Tel Aviv this June but cancelled the date in December, following a pro-Palestinian campaign urging her to do so. She cited the "overwhelming number of messages and letters” that she had received as one of the reasons behind her decision.

Last night, however, proved that the fallout from that decision is ongoing as she played a charity gig in NYC.

Halfway through her set - which saw her sing as Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff (formerly of fun.) played piano - she thanked the crowd in New York for being 'so nice'. In response, a heckler shouted 'In Israel they're nice, also', which prompted Antonoff to angrily stand up and say 'Oh, come on. No, hold on - we're here raising a shit-ton of money. Fuck that negativity' as Lorde urged him to sit down. The pair have been rumoured to be romantically involved since Antonoff's split with Lena Dunham.
