It looks like Adam Levine isn't the only one turning his back on the VMAs - its once-loyal audience is finished with it, too.

Despite attracting some big-name performers like Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus and Lorde, the 2017 show was the lowest-rated in its entire history, it has been revealed.

The Associated Press reports that just 5.68 million viewers watched the show across 10 networks in the USA, which is not good news for an event that is pretty much the biggest on MTV's calendar.

That's down from 6.5 million last year and 9.8 million in 2015 - although there is speculation that going head-to-head with the Game of Thrones finale, which was watched by an incredible 16.5 million viewers.

Could the VMAs be coming to an end after 33 years? We'll have to wait and see...
