Yesterday was a big day for Mark E. Smith.

The frontman of Mancunian post-punk stalwarts The Fall and notorious curmudgeon (i.e. the same man who once described Mumford & Sons as 'retarded Irish folk singers') turned 60, but one news organisation cut his life prematurely short by mistake.

The BBC Music account tweeted a picture of Smith with the caption 'RIP Mark E Smith :(' but it turns out that their announcement was... well, more than a little premature.

They later corrected their mistake and apologised, saying "This was a genuine human error and the message was posted by mistake and swiftly deleted. We apologise for the error.”

Unsurprisingly, Smith himself is not on Twitter (although he should be), so we'll never know his own reaction...
