Sad news this weekend, as it was announced that Sharon Jones, who fronted the soul/r&b group Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, passed away.
Jones had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for the past few years, and although she went into remission after the initial diagnosis, it returned last year and ultimately proved fatal.
She sadly died at the age of 60 on Friday after suffering a stroke on November 8th, with her bandmate Gabriel Roth telling the Los Angeles Times that it happened as she was watching the election results.
He said, laughing: "She told the people that were there that Trump gave her the stroke. She was blaming Trump for the whole thing.”
He added that Jones suffered another stroke on November 9th which affected her ability to talk - although she regained the capacity to sing in the days before she passed.
"She was just moaning at first, and then she was moaning in tune and then she started following chord changes and pretty soon she was humming ‘His Eye on the Sparrow’ with him,” he said. “We all just kept playing and singing with her, and little by little over the next couple of days she actually started moving her mouth and started singing lyrics. She just wanted to sing these gospel songs. Every time we’d stop, she’d just keep singing ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Go Tell It On the Mountain’ and ‘This Little Light of Mine’. We just stayed with her and sang with her and played music with her.”
