Bob Geldof surprised patrons of Sweeney's on Dublin's Dame Street over the weekend by making an impromptu appearance to celebrate the bar's fifth birthday, where the Boomtown Rat stretched his vocal cords alongside Cavan rockers The Strypes - the singer's first public appearance here since the death of his daughter Peaches in April.

Geldof, a vocal fan of The Strypes, joined the fourpiece for a few songs before he retreated the rearof the venue to watch the teenagers finish their performance.

A spokesperson for the bar spoke to independent.ie about Geldof's surprise appearance, indicating that while they thought he might show up, they were not given any advance notice that he would perform.

"Sir Bob has been here a few times and there had been whispers that he'd come to support The Strypes, but we didn't expect him to get on stage. They're all young lads and he is good friends with them and wants them to do well", she said.

Bob Geldof recently announced that the Boomtown Rats will tour this year, with a number of dates scheduled between May and the middle of November. No Irish dates are on the calendar as of now but we'll update you if and when that situation changes.
