The Seattle Police Department have released photographs of the shotgun that Kurt Cobain used to take his own life in 1994.

The department said that the photos were taken in June 2015, and depict cold case Detective Mike Ciesynski holding the gun.

Ciesynski reviewed the case evidence after years of conspiracy theories surrounding the Nirvana singer's death, but found that there was nothing to change the Seattle PD's conclusion that his death was by suicide.

They say that the reason for releasing the images was to dispel theories that the gun had been destroyed or melted down to cover up evidence of the star's alleged murder.

35 images of Cobain's death scene had been released in 2014, and led his widow Courtney Love and daughter Frances Bean Cobain to urge a Seattle judge last summer to keep further photos sealed.

However, an 'investigative journalist' is petitioning to have graphic images of the singer's body released to the public.

Neither Love nor Cobain have made a public comment on the gun photo being released.
