MGM are reportedly eyeing up the 22 year old to theme the 24th Bond movie

Singer Sam Smith looks set to continue his seemingly never-ending ascent after being handpicked by MGM to join the likes of Adele, Madonna, Tina Turner and Shirley Bassey to record the theme song to the upcoming James Bond movie.

Daniel Craig will return for this, the 24th James Bond movie, which is scheduled to begin shooting this October and, if indeed he does get the gig, Smith will be the first male vocalist to sing the theme since Soundgarden's Chris Cornell provided his pipes for 2006's Casino Royale.

The Sun quoted an MGM source as saying: "Sam is our top choice. He has the profile, cool image and astonishing voice to record a Bond theme."

The 'source' then goes on to slightly contradict himself by letting slip that Adele was in fact their real top choice for the role but she wasn't keen to return.

"There is only so long we can hold out for Adele. Daniel Craig was pushing for her because she did such a great job last time around.

"But from her perspective, how can she better what she did with Skyfall? She won an Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe and had a global number one."

If he is indeed picked, as looks likely, it will cap a remarkable year for Londoner Smith. Since bursting onto the scene on Naughty Boy's 'La La La' in May of last year, Smith has released a string of hit singles and his debut album 'In The Lonely Hour' shot straight to the top of the charts upon its release.
