Once upon a time, before the X-Factor and Spotify, getting the Christmas No.1 was a very big deal. It was about more than just having a hit song, it meant your song would define Christmas for a lot of people and would hopefully earn a nice chunk of change if it became a regular on Christmas time radio.
Every year a few different songs would go head to head for the honour, and the No.1 would be revealed on the Christmas edition of Top of the Pops. Watching the show was a family tradition in many a household.
