The nominees for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018 have been announced, and it's certainly a motley bunch of musicians.
Mariah Carey, Tom Waits, Alice Cooper, Tracy Chapman, John Mellencamp, N.W.A., Kool and the Gang, Chrissie Hynde, Tom T. Hall, The Isley Brothers, Jimmy Cliff and Alan Jackson have all earned nominations as performing songwriters.
Other non-performing songwriters that are on the longlist are William “Mickey” Stevenson, Bill Anderson, Maurice Starr, Allee Willis, Steve Dorff, Mike Chapman, Randy Goodrum, Tony Macaulay, and Jermaine Dupri.
Six of those names will go forward to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame next June in New York, with the shortlist being announced around February. Songwriters are eligible only twenty years after their first release.
Earlier this year, Jay-Z became the first rapper inducted into the organisation.
