Live at the Marquee - Playlist
Live at the Marquee in Cork kicks off a month long series of gigs tomorrow (June 7th) and will feature a veritable feast of musical treats over the course of the four weeks. To use that tired phrase once more, there really is something for everyone. I mean, what other line-up could possibly feature both Tom Petty and Jedward?
To get you in the mood for the series of gigs, we've picked out a couple of highlights below for your musical pleasure. You can, of course, check out the full listings on our Summer Festivals page along with all the latest news from Live at the Marquee and all the other top festivals taking place across the country this summer.
Justice, 7th June
French electronic duo Justice are one of the most exciting groups to come from that part of the world since Daft Punk and College. What makes them so interesting is their insistence on incorporating elements of rock and indie music in their music, creating a multi-layered patchwork sound. This should be one of the best gigs of the entire series.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, 8th June
".....and I'm freeeeeeeeee, freeeeeeeefallllllinnn'...."
Tom Petty has done it all in his 35 years in the music business. He's a three time Grammy winner, as well as the recipient of numerous other accolades, and was one of the Traveling Wilburys along with Dylan, Orbison, Harrison, Keltner and Lynne. Any opportunity to see a performer of Petty's calibre should be seized with both hands.
The Specials, 11th June
"So let me just thank you all now for coming along and ask you to stand for our national anthem..."
The Specials are perhaps the best loved band to have emerged from the 2-tone and ska movement in the UK around the late 70's and early 80's. Armed with an array of memorable tunes, The Specials are a band that have to be seen if you have yet to experience the pleasure.
Jedward, 24th June
Jedward, still going strong in 2012. Many predicted that the brothers Grimes would be a flash in the pan but no, by sheer persistence the twins have remained in the public eye and are now multi-millionaires. If only they could win us that Eurovision. Maybe the third time will be a charm?
Jessie J, 1st July
Pop princess Jessie J has come out of nowhere to sell an astonishing 11 million singles and 2.5 million albums in the last couple of years and she will bring the curtain down with the very last show of the Marquee series. Jessie J's first arena tour will be taking place next year, so this could prove to be the last chance to see her in an intimate (well, sort of) venue!
