James Blake has won the 2013 Mercury Prize, beating the likes of Laura Mvula, David Bowie, Disclosure and Villagers to the award.

Blake was announced as the winner on Wednesday evening at a ceremony in London's Roundhouse.

The Londoner delivered a brief speech when accepting his award, saying: "Thank you to my parents for showing me the importance of being independent."

This was Blake's second nomination for the award, with this debut - and self-titled - album also being nominated for the prestigious prize.

Blake follows in the footsteps of Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, PJ Harvey and last year's winner Alt-J in taking home the biggest accolade in British and Irish music.
