Ivestigation Launched as Love Parade Death Toll Rises To 21

28 July 2010

The 21st victim of the weekend's tragic Love Parade stampede has died in hospital in Germany overnight. ABC News reports the 25 year old German woman died from injuries sustained on Saturday, when mass overcrowding led to a giant crush in a tunnel in Duisburg where the annual dance music festival was being held.

Over 500 people were injured in the crush, and festival organiser Rainer Schaller has said that out of respect for those killed, the event will never be held again.
"My thoughts in these difficult times go out to those that who have experienced this tragic event and those who are in grief ... Love Parade has always been a cheerful and peaceful event that, however, will be overshadowed in the future by events of [July 24].

A criminal investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the stampede, which has caused widespread speculation that the disused 230,000 square metre railway station where the event was being held was never large enough to accommodate an estimated 1.4million festival goers who came to Duisburg to see headlining acts Tiesto, David Guetta and Booka Shade, among others.. The investigation will look at the security plans for the event and may lead to charges of negligent homicide.

A book of condolences has been opened and a service of remembrance is also being planned.
