You may recall that we reported on Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's ever-so-punk outburst on stage in Las Vegas last month and the subsequent not-so-punk apology to his corporate hosts who bankrolled the gig.

Billie Joe admitted himself to rehab after the incident, seeking treatment for substance abuse. It was not initially known how long Armstrong would be spending there, but it seems he might be in for the long haul because the band took the collective decision to cancel the remainder of the band's 2012 tour dates as well as postpone shows in January and February next year.

"Obviously the timing for this isn't ideal but Billie Joe's well-being is our main concern," Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt said. "We are happy to say that Billie Joe is doing well."

In some sort of compensation to fans, Green Day have moved forward the release of ¡Tré!, the last in a trilogy of albums announced by the band in recent months, and it will now hit the shelves on December 11th instead of January 13th. The second album, ¡Dos!, will be released on November 13th.

Meanwhile, Metallica have paid tribute to Green Day with a performance of the band's seminal hit 'American Idiot' at the Voodoo Festival in New Orleans - a show that Armstrong and Green Day were set to headline. See the video below.
