He recently celebrated his 70th birthday but Elton John shows no signs of slowing down, if his tour schedule is anything to go by.

However, the music icon has been forced to cancel several gigs over the next month, after being hospitalised at the weekend for a "harmful and unusual bacterial infection”.

As Rolling Stone report, the situation was serious enough for the singer to be placed in intensive care, and he is believed to have contracted the infection while on tour in South America. They say that he became 'violently ill' on a flight from Santiago, Chile before returning to the UK for hospital treatment.

"Thankfully, Elton's medical team identified this quickly and treated it successfully," a statement read. "He is expected to make a full and complete recovery."

He was released from hospital on Saturday and is due to resume his tour at Twickenham in London on June 3rd.
