David Bowie may have allegedly retired from touring, but he remains active in the studio as he has announced the release of a new album, 'Blackstar'.

The iconic musician's last record was 2013's 'The Next Day', which he did not tour or promote. Yesterday, he announced that its follow-up would be released on January 8th, which is his 69th birthday.

He said in a statement on Facebook:

"It can now be confirmed that ‘Blackstar’ is the forthcoming single and album from David Bowie.

Contrary to inaccurate reporting on the sound and content of the album, only the following can be confirmed:

The single will be released on November 20th and is not part of David’s theatre piece ‘Lazarus’.

The album will be released on David’s birthday, January 8th 2016."

Bowie is writing the music for new Broadway show 'Lazarus' with Irish playwright Enda Walsh.
