The fallout from the forthcoming series of Garth Brooks concerts at Croke Park has intensified after Anthony Fay, solicitor for the Croke Park Community, slammed Dublin City Council's lack of willingness to meet with local residents to discuss their concerns.

The Croke Park Community allege that the concert promoters have "engaged in unlawful activity in organising and promoting concerts without a license." The Garth Brooks concerts are being promoted by Aiken Promotions.

The organisation of concerts and other similar events in advance of the awarding of a license is commonplace in Ireland and elsewhere.

In a press release titled "Dublin City Council to Gag Croke Park Community, Mr. Fay said: "The local authority is willing to meet with the promoter and yet ignore the opinions of local residents and businesses. City councillors also passed a motion last April to hold this public meeting. It is undemocratic of DCC to now override politicians acting with a public mandate."

Mr Fay continued: "These additional concerts would set a future precedent and greatly impact on the quality of people's lives in the area. The local community have overwhelmingly demanded a public hearing to adequately present their case. This must be granted in the interests of fair procedures and natural justice."

"Dublin City Council have still not addressed the most important issue that the Concert Promoters and/or Croke Park Stadium had engaged in unlawful activity in organising and promoting concerts without a License."

More than 370 complaints or queries have been lodged by local residents, principally objecting to noise and waste pollution, the fact that residents weren't notified prior to the concerts being announced and the DCC's lack of willingness to hold a public meeting to air grievances.

An agreement was reached between Croke Park/the GAA and local residents in 2009 that no more than three concerts would be held at the stadium per year. The Garth Brooks series and the recent One Direction concerts would take the 2014 tally to a total of eight concerts in little more than a few months.

The Garth Brooks gig series is scheduled to take place from Friday 25th to Tuesday 29th July.
