Chris Cornell's cause of death has been confirmed.

The Soundgarden frontman was 52 when he died in his hotel room on Wednesday night after his band had played in Detroit.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed in a statement that the musician had taken his own life. "The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide," their statement read. "A full autopsy report has not yet been completed."

A spokesperson for Detroit Police told the BBC that they had received a call after midnight local time on Wednesday, saying "He was found on the bathroom floor, our medical unit were called and he was pronounced dead on scene. A family friend went to go check on him and observed him on the bathroom floor. The body was transferred to the medical examiner's office."

Cornell is survived by his wife Vicky and their two children Toni and Christopher, as well as his daughter from a previous marriage, Lillian Jean.
