Swedish DJ Avicii has shelved his scheduled headline appearance at Ultra Music Festival in Miami after falling ill during a flight to Florida.

The 24-year-old, whose real name is Tim Bergling, had complained of feeling unwell prior to boarding the flight but his condition deteriorated on board to the extent that the DJ was brought directly to hospital when the flight landed where he underwent surgery on his gall bladder.

Avicii updated fans of his condition via his official Facebook page, saying: "I'm really sorry but as some of you have already heard, I will not be playing Ultra Festival this weekend.

"My fans know that I have had issues in the past with my stomach and pancreatitis… I woke up on Wednesday morning with serious pain but I flew to Miami anyway, hoping that it would go away. The pain was still there when I landed so I went straight to hospital. I was treated and left later that night.

"Unfortunately, the pain came back yesterday afternoon and I returned to hospital where the admitted me to stay overnight. My doctors have decided to operate and remove my gall bladder tomorrow morning. It's a routine procedure and all going well, I should expect to be fully recovered and back on my feet in time for my US True Tour."

The DJ, who was hospitalised for 12 days with acute pancreatitis in 2012, finished his post by thanking his fans for their support.

Deadmau5 will take Avicii's place at the top of the Ultra bill.
