A single lock of David Bowie's hair sold for the unbelievable amount of $18,750 (€16,900) at an auction in Los Angeles at the weekend.

The lock was originally cut from the late music icon's head in 1983, when he went in for a sitting at Madam Tussaud's and was kept by wig maker Wendy Farrier.

It was auctioned by Heritage Auctions over the weekend and sold to an unknown buyer who we can assume is a Bowie uber-fan for a pretty penny.

Consequence of Sound report that Farrier asked to keep the hair after it was finished with, and kept it framed for the last 33 years. Reportedly, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to an animal welfare centre in Thailand.
