If you're a fan of SpongeBob Squarepants and also a fan of David Bowie's music, you may have thought that those two interests had no chance whatsoever of overlapping.

Well, brace yourself - because they're about to.

Although Bowie contributed his voice to the show in 2007 according to Pitchfork, a SpongeBob Squarepants musical is in the works, and some big names have already come on board to pen original songs for it - including Bowie, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, The Flaming Lips and T.I.

Dirty Projectors, Plain White Ts, They Might Be Giants, Panic at the Disco and Lady Antebellum have also been enlisted to write songs for the project.

By our count, that's an odd gathering of genres - from hip-hop to psych-rock to emo to pop to country - but we wouldn't expect anything less from the zany sponge from Bikini Bottom.

'SpongeBob the Musical' will open in Chicago next July, with previews from June 2016.

Bowie's last album was 2013's 'The Next Day'.
