Ireland's most famed outdoor gig takes place this weekend when the stage goes up, the portaloos are put in place and the crowds flood into a field beside Slane Castle in Co. Meath.

Oh yes, and then there's the music. Foo Fighters will headline the bill for the first time, so it's bound to be a loud night, if nothing else.

They're joined by Hozier, Ash, Kaiser Chiefs and The Strypes.

To celebrate the gig, we've collated a bunch of facts that you might not know (or admittedly, want to know) about the bands playing.

1. The combined age of The Strypes (Josh McClorey, Evan Walsh, Pete O'Hanlon and Ross Farrelly), the youngest band on the bill, is 73. The combined age of the oldest band on the bill, Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear and Chris Shiflett) is 234. Yikes.

2. Kaiser Chiefs take their name from South African football team Kaizer Chiefs. They were formerly known as Runston Parva and then Parva; they adopted the football-themed name because as Leeds United fans, it was former captain Lucas Radebe's first club.

3. You've probably heard of Andrew Hozier-Byrne's stint in the Trinity Orchestra - but did you know that he was also a member of the choir Anúna? Yes, the same Anúna that was associated with the original Riverdance from 1994-96. Obviously, Hozier wasn't in the choir at that time - mostly because he was four years old - but he was a soloist with them from the ages of 18 to 22. There he is, above.

4. It's not Ash's first time on the Slane bill. They previously supported U2 in 2001 at Bono and co.'s second gig that year.

5. Foo Fighters were never meant to be a full-time band. They originally began as the solo outlet for Dave Grohl after Nirvana split. He had been writing songs for some time; after Kurt Cobain died he went into the studio to record them and played almost every instrument on 1995's 'Foo Fighters' himself. The other musicians came on board originally to support the album when Grohl was playing those songs live. Twenty years later...

6. The artwork of Hozier's debut album - as well as the accompanying singles - was designed by his mother, Raine Hozier-Byrne, who is an artist.

7. The last Irish festival bill that Kaiser Chiefs were on the line-up for was supporting Aslan at Tallaght Stadium in 2012. The gig was subsequently cancelled, FYI. The frontman Ricky Wilson landed a mentor slot on The Voice (UK), and… well, we're not saying those two things are connected. We'd never say that.

8. There is a 'secret' track at the end of Ash's acclaimed debut album '1977' called 'Sick Party'. It's basically the sound of the three band members - Tim Wheeler, Rick McMurray and Mark Hamilton - vomiting and laughing. Hey, they were 19 at the time. Just don't request it during their Slane set.  And best not listen to it while you're eating, either.
