This Month's Top Albums: July

Words: John Balfe

Each and every month we here at entertainment.ie try to keep you abreast of the latest new music releases by highlighting a few which we deem worthy of note. July will see a few bright sparks amongst the usual glut of releases. There's a new record from 50 Cent incoming, as well as Passion Pit's sophomore effort and a Blur anthology collection. Linkin Park release a new one too, as do The Offspring who are apparently still together, so check below for the full skinny.

Linkin Park - Living Things - 26th June

Living Things is the fifth studio album from US rockers Linkin Park and the group say that the record combines all the elements from their previous efforts which, when combined, will produce an entirely new sound and promise that it will be a far more personal album than anything they have done in the past. We're unconvinced here in the office and, while we haven't heard it yet, how different can it be?

The Offspring - Days Go By - 26th June

Californian punk rockers The Offspring release their ninth album (and first after a four year hiatus) at the end of June - an album they have been working on since 2009. It's been 18 years since The Offspring scored their biggest hit, the multi-million selling Smash and, to some degree, the band have been trying to repeat that album's success ever since. The sceptic in me would suggest that the band are fighting a losing battle.

50 Cent - Untitled - 2nd July

50 Cent has been left behind somewhat in the three years since the release of his last album Before I Self Destruct. While Fiddy was focussing on his film career (he's been involved in 16 film projects), contemporaries like Jay-Z and Kanye West have retaken the hip hop throne. Ten years on from 50 Cent's big breakthrough, is he about to do it all over again?

Passion Pit - Gossamer - 24th July

Passion Pit's second album is the follow-up to Manners, an album which significantly announced the arrival of the American electro-pop group. Manners made a small but significant impact on the charts on both sides of the Atlantic but all initial signs suggest that Gossamer is the album with which the Massachusetts band could make a real impact.

Blur - Blur 21 - 30th July

Blur 21 is a massive CD, DVD and vinyl box which will coincide with the 21st anniversary of the release of the band's first album Leisure and contains a mammoth collection o f 18 CDs, 3 DVDs and one vinyl as well as hardcover book chronicling the history of the band. Even in these austere times, this collection is a must for any hardcore fans of Blur or Britpop in general.
