This Month's Top Albums: April
Words: John Balfe
Another month, another list of upcoming albums to digest! Every month we attempt to wade our way through the lists of upcoming albums and shine a spotlight on same that we think, one way or another, might make some sort of impression. This month we have a mixed bag, including the second album from a pretender to the pop crown, some Welsh rock music and the small matter of a Wainwright release. Check 'em out below.
Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded - 3rd April
Nicki Minaj continues her assault on the popular music landscape with Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, the Trinidadian-American's second studio album. Minaj's 2010 debut Pink Friday firmly established herself as a challenger to the pop throne but it remains to be seen if her sophomore effort has enough about itself to usurp the likes of Rihanna from the upper echelons of the charts.
Lostprophets - Weapons - 3rd April
Welsh rockers Lostprophets release their fifth studio album Weapons at the beginning of March, the follow-up to 2010's The Betrayed, an album which was the grateful recipient of positive reviews pretty much across the board. This be the first album with new drummer Luke Johnson and all eyes will be on the band to see if they can continue to be the well-oiled rock n' roll hit machine that they've been in the past.
Rufus Wainwright - Out of the Game - 23rd April
Rufus Wainright's seventh album is something of a star-studded affair, boasting appearances by and collaborations with Rufus' sister Martha, Thomas 'Doveman' Bartlett, Sean Lennon, Wilco and Yeah Yeah Yeah's guitarist Nick Zinner and was produced by acclaimed producer Mark Ronson. Wainwright has claimed in interviews that Out of the Game will contain some of his most "danceable" music yet. Time will tell if our definition of that word aligns with Rufus'. Either way this promises to be a very interesting listen.
The Dandy Warhols - This Machine - 24th April
There was a time about 12 years ago when The Dandy Warhols were one of the most talked about bands in the world, selling out tours around the world and their music videos were receiving heavy rotation on MTV. These days, in the cold, hard like of 2012, their star has fallen slightly but there's nothing to suggest that the same frenetic verve has disappeared from their music. We'll find out for sure though towards the end of April.
Marina and the Diamonds - Electra Heart - 30th April
Marina Lambrini Diamandis, who thankfully goes by the slightly easier to remember moniker of Marina and the Diamonds, released her debut album The Family Jewels in 2010 and was invited to perform at a slew of summer festivals on the back on it. Electra Heart, Marina's second album, is due out at the end of April and owing to a recent support slot with Katy Perry her profile has never been bigger. This could be the record to take her to the next plateau.
