21 Jump Street has come out of nowhere to quite possibly become the funniest film of the year. It's based on the 80s TV show of the same name which featured a young Johnny Depp. It's not like that show was crying out for a reboot, but by the time the credits roll you'll be glad that somebody thought it would be ideal for an action comedy. The basic premise is that of twentysomething cops going undercover as high school students to investigate playpen crimes. In this case, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are the dopey cops investigating a high school drugs ring. In the meantime, they feel out of place but try to bond with the Justin Bieber/Miley Cyrus/Twilight generation. Tatum and Hill make a great double act, all dim-bulb looks and confused thoughts. Their attempts to get "in" with their classmates is hilarious, particularly during the party sequence. The sharp script by Michael Bacall (Project X) has some great one-liners and there are some telling observations about re-living lost dreams. Expectations were initially low for this film, so it's a pleasant surprise to find that it's such a delight. Sequel please.

Nice Review. I think that the criticism of Channing Tatum was slightly harsh. I hated him up until I saw Haywire, which I taught in was very good in. Now, in 21 Jump Street he is hilarious. It is very hard to share a screen with Jonah Hill because the man is one of the funniest in Hollywood at the moment and Tatum is just as funny as him in this movie. Granted, Tatum has made awful movies, but he is set to take the lead in Soderbergh's next two pictures which could turn him from a man with patchy charisma into a genuine leading man. On another note, big shout out to Rob Riggle and Dave Franco who were great in this film.
