Young Adult
Director: Jason Reitman
Starring: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson
Details: US/94mins TBC
Charlize Theron is a moderately successful writer of a young adult book series, who returns home to a dead-end small town in an attempt to rekindle a once passionate relationship with Patrick Wilson's high school sweetheart - who is now happily married with a new born baby. Stopping at nothing to to win him back, she inadvertently begins an unlikely friendship with a local nice guy she once knew (an excellent performance from comedian, Patton Oswalt) who acts as her conscience - mainly because she doesn't have one.
Given the ostensible comedic tone of Young Adult, it offers a (fairly uncompromisingly) nasty lead character when it slips into its darker moments. This woman is all kinds of selfish, and doesn't appear to have changed a lot since High School. But there are hints of what she's gone through since her teen years, and the bleeding of those details is done in a way that still somehow evokes sprinklings of empathy. This is achieved with her still being a vicious piece of work, mind, and while you never exactly warm to her, it's admirable that no life lessons are learnt here.
The real strong point is Oswalt - who shines as the common sense of the movie. He's there to bring Theron's character back down to earth, which he does with unexpected hilarity at points. An actor with lesser comic timing may have overplayed the "crippled" element somewhat, but Patton is subtle and the perfect balance for Theron's nasty bitch. Reitman see's this early on and continually goes back to the comedian, who's a strong point of an already stellar production. Wilson is typically amiable, but no one else registers enough to matter.
Not a patch on Juno or Up in the Air, this is still an admirably unflinching take on a genre that generally moves in a different direction.

Director Jason Reitman re-teams with writer Diablo Cody for Young Adult, but don't expect Juno - 20 Years Later. Charlize Theron gives a commendable performance as lonely, depressed thirtysomething Mavis who really hasn't grown up since her teen years. She comes back to her hometown to re-kindle her relationship with an old flame, who now has a family of his own. The big problem with this film is the central character. Some may regard Mavis' behaviour as quirky, but it's hard to get past the fact that Mavis is essentially mentally ill. Mental illness is not a laughing matter, hence the often bitter tone of the film which barely raises anything more than a quiet chuckle. The cast are all good, especially sad sack Patton Oswalt as Mavis' drinking buddy. Cody once again proves that she has a great ear for dialogue, but there's no getting past the fact that Mavis is an unlikeable character who sees nothing wrong with being a homewrecker. You'll either love this film or hate it. That might explain why it was snubbed in the Oscar nominations recently.

I got to see this before it came out as I won preview tickets. However I did not enjoy it, the start was veryyy boring, long, so after 46 mins I left! I just felt the storyline was going nowhere. Plus I dont agree with homewrecking even in a film for "fun or a giggle" Disappointed

Looking forward to seeing this. Saw the trailer and it looks brilliant, really enjoyed Juno too. Got to give Charlize Theron her due credit she's a drop dead fox but has no problem playing absolute physcho's. Was at the Cinema last week and was strong armed by the missus away from seeing this to go instead to see The Descendents .. on hindsight, probably a mistake.
