Horses have had a bad run of late (sorry), but unlike recent efforts, here the focus isn't on one racing, but rather one stumbling across mainland Europe during the First World War. Raised by Jeremy Irvine's idealistic but poor sort, Albert, the amusingly named "Joey" soon finds himself in the middle of a war and on enemy lines. Albert can't bear to be without his four legged buddy, so signs up for national service in the hope they'll meet again one day.
Pulling out every visual trick in the book, you know you're in trouble a few minutes in when the soundtrack is already telling you exactly how to feel. For the first twenty five minutes or so this is basically a Hovis ad with a bigger budget, and it only ever pulls out of that stage when proceedings switch to the war. In fairness, the battle scenes are wonderfully staged, but the exchanges between soldiers, even with actors as talented as these, feel more like mini speeches. Everyone is projecting so the folks in the cheap seats can hear.
That's not to say there's not an audience for War Horse. It's a safe, firmly Sunday afternoon, old school production that your grandparents will love. There's something inherently classy about it; from the slick cinematography to the stunning set design - aesthetically at least - this is impressive stuff. And as ''lead animal characters that can't speak'' go, Joey manages to show a decent amount of range and actually takes direction better than some of the human cast.
Whatever way you dress it up, Steven Spielberg is on a cold streak and War Horse only extends that. The Daniel Day Lewis starring Abraham Lincoln biopic is up next, and for everyones sake lets hope the script is better there.

Great movie as you would expect from Speilberg. Well developed characters, great cinetography. The destructive war element is played down a bit but defintiely worth seeing

After the so-so antics of Tintin, Steven Spielberg returns to live action films with War Horse, an adaptation of both a novel and a play. It essentially follows the fortunes of "miraculous 'orse" Joey as it's passed on from owner to owner, before, during and after WWI. If you find Spielberg's occasional treacly sentiment enough to put your fingers in your throat, then you might want to steer clear of War Horse. It presents a rose-tinted view of The (Not-So) Great War, which is episodic in nature but doesn't completely add up. Just be thankful the horse doesn't talk or narrate the film... All the same though, the film is quietly stirring and one memorable scene involves an English soldier, a German soldier, No-Man's Land and Joey. The film is being touted for Oscars, but apart from some technical awards (e.g. the excellent cinematography), I'd be surprised if it won much. It reminds me of Empire Of The Sun, but without any genuine impact. Worth a look, but don't expect a masterpiece.

I thought this movie was about a real horse in WW1 called Warrior but i was mistaken. This was an overly sentimental cross between Free Willy, Lassie and Saving Private Ryan. While the movie had some bigname actors the best acting was done by the horse! Terrible story and terrible script, Spielberg at his worst. It should have been called Warhorses**te

A classic american cheesy movie with an additional topping of cheese as it was so unrealistic to look at. If you're into the simple popcorn movies (or a girl under 13)which requires no brain thought it'll be fine otherwise i'd be advising you not to waste your money or time on a terrible movie

really really painful american cod..so sickly sweet it made the overpriced jellybeans in the lobby taste sour. it seems like king steven of hollywoodland and the emperors new clothes. someone needs to do something to stop this type of insanity continuing.

I did not like this movie at all... I found it all too gruesome and harrowing to watch.. I had hoped it would be more about the horse, than the war. Hated the middle of the film..not an enjoyable film- took me a while to sleep after it

This was a fantastic movie for an adult. some of the scenes were very graphic for a childrensbook. My eight year old loved the book and begged to see the film. I am glad that I didnt take her but I f the sequel Farmboy comes out I hope it wont be so violent. The horse was amazing indeed all the horses were. A big box og tissues needed. did promise if the sequel Farmhorse comes out Ill take her to it.

Ok was thinking of giving War Horse either 3 or 4 stars, decided to give it 4 stars, considering I never wanted to see this movie, I went to see this movie as there was nothing else on at the time. Well I had such negetive expectations but.... I really enjoyed it!! I couldnt recommend this movie enough, well worth the cinema trip, great filming, cast, plus my little cousin also really enjoyed it. Fun for all the family. But be ready to be asked alot of questions from the little ones, such as which team does he belong to [army], does the horse belong to that boy, why is the man waving a white flag - so funny need I say more!
