Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans

Special effects guru Patrick Tatopoulos makes his feature directing debut with the third, and best, instalment in the popular Underworld series. This time Kate Beckinsale and director hubby Len Wiseman have bounced, leaving franchise stalwarts Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy as the only original cast members. Not that their presence is missed, as both actors look to be enjoying themselves immensely in this moody and overtly gothic production, that still doesn't skimp on the fetish outfits. Essentially an origin story as to why the Lycan's (werewolves to you and me) and Vampires don't really get along; it chronicles the rise of Sheen's Moses-like figure, who goes from abused slave to rallying his chained brethren to rebel and chow down on some vampire ass, in order to save their own furry backdoors. If that wasn't enough to keep him busy, he's also partaking in an all-sorts-of-wrong affair with Sonya (Mitra), the dishy daughter of the head-honcho vampire - which is a catalyst for the shenanigans of the last two movies. Surprisingly enjoyable in parts, this is of course utterly ridiculous; but with startlingly buff Sheen and a frolicking-in-the-dastardly Nighy, it's not without some quality thespian ability on show. Mitra is a fine substitute for the missing Beckinsale also, wielding her sword efficiently and managing to look sexy doing so; while the plot links nicely into the first Underworld film. There are still plotholes galore, but chances are this is still a lot better than you thought it would be.
