Interview with Director Joseph Kosinski
Starring: Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, Michael Sheen, Olivia Wilde
Details: US/125mins PG
The first Tron was no masterpiece and initially flopped upon its release. But director Kosinski realises this, and has smartly taken the core idea and plot and expanded it into an action epic, ensuring folk won't need to have seen the original flick to enjoy this follow-up.
It's been twenty-odd years since Garrett Hedlund's Sam has seen his father. Going to work one night, he had promised a young Sam a trip to the arcade, but never came home, leaving the youngster as heir to a multi-million dollar computer Software Company. Today, the 27-year-old Sam isn't interested in his inherited gig, instead living the life of a rogue programmer with a penchant for danger. When his dad's former business partner turns up with some information about his aul' lad, Sam heads to the arcade he worked from and finds himself transported to The Grid.
Kosinski makes sure every single cent of the reported $200 million production budget is seen on screen. The scenes outside of The Grid are all filmed in 2D, but are still executed with impressive style, showing a helmer with remarkable assurance for a first feature. The opening shot in particular draws you in wonderfully, slowly taking in the city and underlining the mood.
What doesn't work is the clunky exposition, obviously injected to make it feel like a standalone film - not a sequel to a flop from 28 years ago. Kosinski runs with the ideas he's given, but is obviously keen to get to the action - and Jeff Bridges. Those sequences are impressively assembled and actually make good use of the often maligned 3D format. When Sam first enters The Grid, it really is aesthetically incredible - with Daft Punk's cracking score only adding to the ambience.
Performance-wise, Bridges has a bit of fun as the now God-like creator, while Olivia Wilde does 'sexy but naive' very well (granted, the outfit contributes). Hedlund is a little stiff in the earlier scenes - the dodgy dialogue doesn't help - but comes into his own for the action sequences. Elsewhere, Michael Sheen's cameo is needlessly ostentatious, but kind of fun for what is essentially a glorified plot advancer.
Deeply flawed, sure - but if you're looking for an all-immersing sci-fi cinematic experience, Tron: Legacy delivers.

A good movie for sleeping through. Your dreams will make more sense.

Jeff Bridges has a new movie coming out - True Grit - the old John Wayne remake. Reports are good.

Is it a bad sign that the Coen brothers are starting to remake movies. First the terrible Ladykillers and now this.

looks good but its boring and the clu character as the young flynn is absolutely awful for a movie that is based in a computer generated world its pretty awful that they spent 200million and couldnt even get that right, the story is risible, 2d characters some seriously dodgy acting(Hedlund) A 3 star movie at most the overall effects are beautiful (but an hour in and the boredom sets in) the sound effects editing is a thing of beauty and so is the soundtrack. What a disappointment.

This is a really poor film. The soundtrack is ace and the CGI looks spectacular. But the dialog is consistently awful and the plot makes no sense. One of those films where I end up blowing out my cheeks quite regularly, thinking: "Did I just pay 12 bucks for this?"

Shocking Film. Do not go see the 3-D effects. It was shot in 2-D and there are only one or two real 3-D clips. none of which are worth seeing. The story is poor, the effects are average. It's misleading to mention Avatar in the review. It's not even close. For the life of me I can't understand how the Entertainment.ie reviewer gave it four stars. I'd have given it two.

It is my experience that only those who dislike (or in this case, dont understand) a film leave the most comments. Have any of you seen the first film? It probably would have helped to have rented it out first before paying the 12 bucks to see the sequel. But it DOES stand up on its own, and is a great piece of sci fi about a sub atomic world and those trapped within it.

This is a great movie. I really enjoyed it and thought it was visually spectacular. There's enough to the story, for those who can concentrate longer than a goldfish, and it's very true to the original format of TRON while updating the games and story with some clever plot lines and amazing visuals. The sound track helps make it even more spectacular at times.

I really really enjoyed this. I never went expecting a story that made sense in this world only that it did in it's own world. No science fiction movie ever makes sense - there is no sound in space! Only 2001 got that right. There is only a tiny likelihood that aliens would ever be humanoid. People can't fall from those heights in action movies and be ok. If Star Trek transporters worked no one would ever die because it's just digital data transmitted so can be stored ...and so on. Tron had wooden acting from the lead but he looked really hot in his bodysuit. The production design was brilliant and the sound and music was great. It's an experience rather than a narrative film just like 2001, Blade Runner and music albums.
