Tower Heist
Director: Brett Ratner
Starring: Alan Alda, Ben Stiller, Casey Affleck, Eddie Murphy, Gabourey Sidibe, Matthew Broderick, Michael Pena, Tea Leoni
Details: US/104mins 12A
Stiller is the manager of a high end apartment complex that houses some of the richest people in Manhattan. Great at his job, he nonetheless feels responsible when one of his buildings richest tenants, Alan Alda's smug investor, is charged with financial fraud, having squandered all of his staff's pensions. Forging a plan to get the money back, he enlists the help of other former employees and Eddie Murphy's fast talking street hustler; together they plan a daring heist.
It is Murphy's finest work since Bowfinger - which is a bar he lowered himself with a slew of appalling kiddie flicks. Voicing Donkey aside, it's been a depressing few years for one of the funniest comedians to ever grace a stage microphone in hand, but this could be the nudge in the right direction he needs. Murphy's guy here isn't a million miles away from one of his best roles, Reggie in 48 Hours. While a lack of screen time never sees it scale those heights, it's a performance that proves once again how effective he can be with the right material. Broderick and Affleck are also very funny, while Stiller is basically the straight man, carrying the plot forward.
Easily Ratner's best film to date, the director is helped immensely by a sharp, surprisingly smart script and talented, game players. Large, star heavy casts are never easy to manage, but Ratner constantly surprises you with who he gives the best lines too. The set-up is, of course, completely ridiculous, and more than once borrows from Ocean's Eleven - who it shares a scripter with. That said, it achieves exactly what it sets out to do; there are broad laughs, high rise thrills and an easy to follow plot that still somehow feels effortlessly smart.
A crowd-pleaser that will play brilliantly to the multiplex crowd; expect Tower Heist to make a fortune.

Brilliant movie, saw it last night. So funny! A great comeback for Eddie Murphy. It really is a must see. It's better than the trailer makes it out to be which was good. Not too much is given away in the trailer.

This enjoyable comedy caper has come in under the radar, but it could prove to be a sleeper hit thanks to its healthy mixture of laughs, thrills and heart. Given the times that we live in, it definitely helps that our heroes are immediately relatable. They're average working joes who are caught in a Bernie Madoff-style swindle on their pensions and seek payback through the daring tower heist of the title. Whereas many films fall down in the third act, this one actually gets better towards the end. It had me on the edge of my seat, rooting for them all the way. While the climactic heist itself may require a Mythbusters episode to see if it's physically possible in the real world, audiences are more forgiving to movie characters and situations. Worth a look.

Very funny movie with some fantastic banter between the main characters. Stiller and Murphy are very likable and the bad guy is every bit a scumbag that you need. The trailer doesn't do this movie justice. GO SEE!!!

I fell asleep during this preposterous movie. Murphy is great to be fair but was under used in the time my eyes were open. If you dont expect to be challenged even just a little bit when you go to the cinema then this kind of hollywood fodder is for you. Its a formula we have seen 1001 times and there nothing remotely fresh about it. I think people are being a little too generous in their praise for a very ordinary, same old same old american comedy.

I went to see this film not expecting much as I don't like Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller is not much better. However I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the film was funny . I really enjoyed it, a few moments of real hilarity , generally it was good

Shockingly bad movie. Badly written, unevenly paced and questionably edited. Actors are just dialling in their performances. God, I found nothing positive I could say about this at all. Seems from comments above that I'm in the minority but don't say that you haven't been warned. The one piece of happiness that I got from it was that at least I didn't pay to see it in the cinema.
