This Means War
Director: McG
Starring: Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy
Details: US/97mins 15A
Pine and Hardy are two secret agent types who - through some sort of blinding coincidence - both end up dating Reese Witherspoon's high flying executive. Naturally she just can't find a man... Until y'know, these two suave secret agents show up on the scene. The aforementioned two lads are best mates, but ego's soon get in the way as they desperately try to outdo one another for the love of the lady, and utilise every government resource at their disposable to do so. Somewhere in there Chelsea Handler attempts (and fails) to be funny.
One of my biggest problems with This Means War's is that it's so lazy. Movies like Mr and Mrs Smith were obviously the template in terms of tone, but McG's film never puts in the groundwork or bothers attempting to stage decent action sequences. One car care chase ends with Chelsea Handler's car nonsensically spinning off of a freeway after a jump cut into a close up of her face. It comes out of seemingly nowhere, and most of the film is that sloppy - even in terms of the brass tacks technical side.
All too often McG falls back onto the charm of his leading men, and Hardy in particular looks very bored. The British actor is evidently more accustomed to material that requires him to mould a performance nowadays, and while he is more than capable of giving a 'surface only' turn it's plainly obvious his heart wasn't in it here. Pine is a watered down version of the cocky Captain Kirk he portrayed in Star Trek, but is never really given an opportunity to make a proper run at his guy. Witherspoon is miscast; I don't buy those two guys fighting over her and she doesn't convince me in the running time that they should be.
Put simply; This Means War is a bad film and is not worth your money.

You're know what you're getting with a film by McG - something loud, empty-headed and more akin to cinematic fast food. This Means War stretches credibility with a plot that shouldn't even work in the movie world, let alone the real world. Two competitive CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who seem to have plenty of time on their hands, go head-to-head as they try to win over the charms of Reese Witherspoon... like she's the only woman in Los Angeles. The playful banter and rapport between Pine and Hardy as they try to upstage each other is fun to watch, but Witherspoon is wasted in a role that's beneath her comedic talent. A lazy sub-plot is added in about a German bad guy, but there's no sense of any real danger. It's all completely predictable and Hollywood-manufactured. If you've seen the trailer, then you've pretty much seen the film.

I watched this movie yesterday and in my opinion it was great! Light-hearted with lots of action, a hint of romance and loads of laughs, it ticked every box for me!!

Dear God this is one awful movie. Its only early March but its got to be a contender for Turkey of the Year 2012. It is a lazy, trite, unfunny flat turd of a movie that goes nowhere, has zero laughs & zero chemistry between the leads. I dont know why the talented Tom Hardy signed up for this, if you want to see him in a great movie please rent Warrior its out now, as for Reese Witherspoon, has she the same agent as Katherine Heigel or Jessica Biel? Please fire them now Reese, you aint getting good advice. There was next to no one at this screening, always a bad sign but please avoid this heap of garbage, save your money, rent Warrior instead!

I went into this movie not expecting too much and that I could "check my brain at door". It was better than I expected and I enjoyed it - good laughs, a great cast, even if they are not exactly exercising their talent here but enjoyable all the same. The showing I attended seemed to enjoy it too. Ignore the critics and if you want a easy going movie to pass a couple of hours I would say This Means War is a good one to pick
