The Woman in Black
Director: James Watkins
Starring: Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Radcliffe
Details: US/TBC TBC
Radcliffe is a single father struggling to cope with the recent passing of his wife, who died during childbirth. On the brink of being fired from his real estate job, he must travel to a creepy country town and close a deal for a country mansion the locals fear haunted. Naturally, the locals are right, and the place is haunted by the ghost of a wronged woman, who is taking her revenge on the children of the village after her son was taken from her before she committed suicide.
Opening on a shot of Radcliffe that shows him all grown up, he still manages to look like a cross between Elijah Wood and Robert Pattinson - granted the latter may be more down to mutton chops and a perpetually pained look. He's front and centre for the entire production and actually does a solid job. That said, he is horribly miscast and there's no getting around that. No amount of facial hair can make him look capable of fathering a four year old, but the Harry Potter star is still surprisingly strong and does a notable job carrying his first film solo.
The scares come thick and fast, and that's somewhat of an issue. There's nothing for ages, then a barrage of thrills that while effective, could've done with a little more spacing. What it does extremely well is the foreboding. The cinematography and set design is moody, gothic and really underlines the creepy atmosphere - even if the story is old hat (granted this tale was originally penned in 1987).
The ending is a little predictable, but overall Hammer continue their mild winning streak.

Susan Hill's bone-chilling 1983 novel The Woman In Black is one of those ghost stories that keeps regenerating, whether it's a stage play, TV movie or this new screen adaptation from the recently resurrected Hammer Films. Daniel Radcliffe tries to break away from Harry Potter as a dour, serious solicitor sent to tidy up the affairs of the late, suitably named Mrs Drablow. In her creepy, isolated house, he discovers an evil presence... and in true Hammer fashion, some fearful, suspicious villagers. An attempt at a resolution with the titular character is a new addition to the story, but it works well. The film is strong on atmosphere, building up a palpable sense of dread throughout... but yet the film never really feels that scary. To a seasoned horror fan like myself, it comes across as rather mild and not as scary as the 1989 TV movie. It's well worth a look though.

It's not as terrifying as it could have been. The distributor asked for 6 seconds of cuts in order to tone down the horror. This was in order to secure a 12A in the UK and we seem to have got the same print despite the higher 15A rating here. I can tell it's the cut print because I've heard that the scene where a girl sets herself on fire was significantly cut down to get the lower rating. A shame. Since when are horror films made for children? After all, it's a story about a child-killing ghost. That's not exactly a bedtime story...

Awful movie, very unoriginal, (perhaps the TV movie was better) relies on sudden jumps for its scares rather than its plot. Horrible casting for the lead. Just a poor outing all round... avoid.

Are you saying he is too young to be a father? Or just looks like it? Surely he doesn't need to be over 20 - what with 13 year olds breeding like rabbits nowadays, he wouldn't need to be older than 17. He has sideburns for god's sake, how much older does he need to look?
