The Magic Flute
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Amy Carson, Benjamin Jay Davis, Joseph Kaiser
Details: UK / France / 135mins (PG).
Branagh is working his socks off lately; with Sleuth recently released, he's also got The Magic Flute, an adaptation of Mozart's opera, out on November 30th. Like Sleuth, The Magic Flute is also a remake (a 1975 Ingmar Bergman film precedes it) and is adapted by Branagh and Stephen Fry. The Norn Iron director switches the locale to from 1791 to WWI and gives the story a major CGI makeover, which might stick in the throat of some opera lovers. Rumour has it that Branagh opens his film with a daring one continuous shot of the opera's overture. After that though, the film fails to live up to the early promise.
