The Ides of March
Director: George Clooney
Starring: Evan Rachel Wood, George Clooney, Jeffrey Wright, Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ryan Gosling
Details: US/TBC TBC
Clooney is Senator Morris - a moralistic politician gunning for the Democratic nomination for President of The United States. Gosling is his intelligent, idealist aide, Stephen Myers, a young man who genuinely believes his guy to be the real deal. Hoffman is a more cynical member of the same team - albeit slightly higher up the food chain. When Myers takes a meeting from the campaign manager of the opposition (another great Giamatti performance), the shit hits the fan and a series of events unfold that makes him question who he's working for and whether there is a right or wrong side at all.
Clooney hasn't so much grown as a director; he's simply displayed that he's just plain good at it. With his first film, his influences were obvious. Here, he's found his own style and voice and proved himself yet again as a remarkable handler of actors. He rests his camera on the face of all of his stars at one point or another, and it only moves in slow pans when something is being emphasised about a character - an effective tool. Otherwise, it's an almost aesthetically static production, but one packed with atmosphere.
The plot is simple, and those expecting a policy-driven film with a libertarian agenda will be disappointed - 'Ides' is much more of a thriller than you might expect. There are elements of Clooney's Morris that reverberate in the current political climate (his poster is distinctly Obama-like) but for the most part, he seems to be an concoction of various politicians.
Out of all of Gosling's impressive performances this year, he has less to do here; mainly he's required to play it ponderous and straight-laced, which he does without breaking a sweat. It's a plot-driven production, and he serves the plot and holds the screen like a true movie star - nobody could have played this part better. Clooney is excellent as Morris, while Hoffman and Wood also impress.
An exceptionally well-made, old fashioned film that clicks in every way that it should.

George Clooney's fourth film as actor/director is tightly-wound, sharply-acted political drama based on a stage play. The relevance of the title is slowly teased out over the course of the film, as we discover how personal relationships in campaign teams are affected by swimming in the murky waters of politics. Clooney once again unselfishly allows his excellent cast of high-calibre actors to take the lead, while he remains mostly in the background except for a few key scenes. I wasn't sure where this film was heading at first, but all the pieces fit together in the end. Like myself, you don't need to be familiar with American politics to understand it, as it's based more on character motivations and their actions, some with tragic consequences. Clooney still remains one of Hollywood's all-round great guys and his career behind the camera is as interesting as his career in front of it. Recommended.

The characters were not fleshed out , I did not care about any of them. The girl was a stupid s**t- slept around, didnt use protection. I found it incredible that anyone in politics or over 21 could be so naive so the characters did not ring true and just because a film is slow does'nt mean it's thoughtful.

Wow Howie, you have got issues with women and so you completely miss the point of the movie: power and its abuses. Despite his "morals", Governor Morris didn't so much as blink in what he did to Molly Stearns and didn't blink when he learned she had an abortion and didn't blink when she took her own life. And finally, who says that in this movie you have to care for the characters? In movies like this, nice is never as good as interesting. You want nice, go home and play with your dolls. You want interesting, watch flawed characters.

Another excellent addition to Clooney's (already) impressive directorial CV. Can this man do no wrong? Gosling and Seymour Hoffman tend to carry the burden here, while Clooney leans towards a more surreptitious role, in the background, yet always a factor... well worth seeing.

"There are elements of Clooney's Morris that reverberate in the current political climate (his poster is distinctly Obama-like)" - According to imdb.com, the iconic image in the "Hope" poster is actually of Obama listening to Clooney speak.

Competent drama that isn't as engaging as I had hoped it would be.

Good cast, acting and camera work can't plaster over the yawning cracks in the plot which is as thin as wallpaper. A well-made but thoroughly disappointing piece for which I am thankful that I didn't pay the big bucks to see in a cinema.

Clooney hits another Home Run. I would have a few little problems with the storyline, accidental pregancy in this day and age is a bit 'Fair City' and I would have a bit of a problem with "the note", but overall, the performances were top notch. Really enoyed it. 4.5 Stars.
