Senna
Director: Asif Kapadia
Starring: Ayrton Senna
Details: UK/France/USA 106mins 12A
Ayrton Senna was a Brazilian racing car driver from a well-off family who first raced competitively in a go cart in the 70s. Realising how much of a natural he was behind the wheel, Senna made his way to Europe in the early 80s and quickly garnered a name for himself in British Formula Three racing. Soon he made the step up to the big leagues and began impressing in races for the Toleman team in Formula One, and was quickly snapped up by Lotus and then, the top team, McClaren. That was the beginning of an epic rivalry between him and teammate, French driver Alain Prost - who was already the two time world champion. An incredible life that was defined by speed and uncharacteristic humility for a racing driver would ultimately end too early in tragedy.
Containing not one spouting head, director Asif Kapadia wisely keeps all the talk on Senna's life purely to voiceover, as his remarkable career unfolds skilfully on screen. Taking clips from his races, edited together with some behind the scenes footage and a small amount of home movie stuff, results in a strangely intimate, but pacey feel. Given how fast the doc moves, and the frantic feel of the race footage, Kapadia has still somehow managed to get under the skin of Formula One and the staggering hypocrisy that seemed routed within it. His work here is stirring and smart.
Former World Champion Lewis Hamilton recently appeared on an episode of Top Gear and attempted to drive one of Ayrton Senna's old racing cars, before branding it "almost impossible" to get around the track. Even as recently as the 90s these machines didn't have a fraction of the high tech mechanics as they do today, and it's a testament to his talent and instincts as a driver that he was such a huge success and endeared himself to the world – particularly in his home land of Brazil where he is still a god.
If there's one part of this documentary that sums Senna up, it's an interview with legendary British driver Jackie Stewart, himself a champion driver in Formula One. He points out to Senna that he has had more collisions than any other driver, to which the visibly perplexed Senna responds "When you are a racing driver and you no longer go for gaps then you are no longer a racing driver." His answer spoke volumes about the man; as far as he was concerned he didn't have a choice - which was why he shone in rainy conditions. When other drivers took their foot off the pedal, he put his down.
A remarkable documentary about a truly extraordinary man, who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Jordan, Pele and any other sporting great you can think of. Go see it.

Hero indeed. I saw a documentary with him before his death, when he was with McLaren. They where testing the car and he was saying there was a problem with the engine. The data from the (limited) sensors where recoding no problems. He badgered the mechanics to strip down the engine. When this was finally done (after more testing) they striped the engine and found there was a kink (two links locking together) in the cam shaft chain. There where two of these chains in the car so to be able to notice something like that in one of those engines is remarkable. God rest Ayrton.

Can't wait to see this. A true legend in a sport that was, during his tenure, a much different beast to the version we see today. He death almost marked the end of the era of racing drivers with a character of their own as we entered a far more corporate-driven F1 where safety is paramount and where attempted overtakes that go wrong are actively penalised. Even if you hate motorsport, this should give you an insight to the whole ensemble of political intruigue, clashes of ego and pure speed that combined to make Formula 1 what it was.

Can't wait. Loads of good sporting documentaries coming out soon. There's one about the West Indies cricket team of the 1980s - race, sport, triumph a heady cocktail indeed.

I cannot wait to see this. Senna is an absolute legend, and not just as an F1 driver, as a sportsman in general and as a human being. He did so much for the Brazilian people. I'll be going to this numerous times!

Senna is a must see movie, even if you are not a Formula 1 fan, in fact I would go as far as saying even if you are not into motor's. Its a heart warming film about a charming man with a passion!

I only started following F1 in 1996 and Senna was always a name of a legendary person who I only saw occasionally on snippets on the web etc. Having now seen the movie, I must say how possessed yet endearing he was- I am now in awe of what he achieved and amazed at his sheer brilliance at the wheel. The most moving for me was him crossing the line and the subsequent podium scene from Brazil 1993. What a man. Go see it, even if you do not have any interest in motorsports. You will not regret it!

Saw this last night, I'm not a big F1 fan but I thought it was absolutely brilliant. He comes across as having been a brilliant driver and a good person. The soundtrack is excellent also. This is a must see. Enjoy!

I AM a Formula 1 fan - have been for years. I remember Ayrton Senna's fatal accident - I was watching it. It was the worst and the best day in Formula 1 history. Worst because the world and the sport lost one of it's best drivers - he was a true hero. There has been and never will be another Senna. Schumacher doesn't hold a candle to the tour de force that was Sienna. The best day because it precipitated the introduction of some much needed safety measures in the sport. I just can't wait to see this movie.... I'm delighted to read all the good reviews because it would be a crime if a movie about the wonderful Senna wasn't good.
