Monsters
Starring: Whitney Able
Details: US/93mins 12A
Set years after a NASA probe carrying alien DNA landed in Mexico, the film focuses on Scoot McNairy's photographer who must take his boss's daughter, (real life missus Whitney Able) home from Mexico through the "infected" zone. The US Military have long occupied the boarders alongside the zone, as both they and their Mexican counterparts struggle to deal with the giant creatures that have taken over half of the country. As the couple make their way across the dangerous terrain, they find themselves connecting on a level they previously never thought possible, while exploring a terrifying, but strangely invigorating world few have experienced.
When Robert Rodriguez made his debut with action flick El Mariachi for a reported $7,000, the film looked about as much as it cost. It goes to show how far technology has come when a filmmaker can do something on a similar financial scale and have there be little difference with most mainstream fare at your local multiplex. But Monsters is a lot more than just a blockbuster on a budget, it's extremely smart, very well acted by a cast improvising (with some found moments before shooting) and simultaneously innovative and pragmatic in a way that few mainstream productions ever are.
You're never quite sure where the film is going to go, and those who go to see it hoping for some gory Godzilla ravaging will be mostly disappointed. There's a very human story that is the focal point, and whatever is going on around that story, however well it works, is almost a subplot to these two characters realising what is going on between them. The easy, natural sparks between McNairy and Able certainly help, and both actors offer exemplary turns.
Monsters will be an invigorating experience for anyone with an interest in filmmaking. But other than that, it's intelligent, inventive cinema on an impressively (self) assembled scale.

I watched this movie last night and have to say before you go see it "DONT" it was aiming for jurassic park and cloverfield and it is a terrible effort. Scoot McNairy aint the best of actors. The film was on for i think 1 hr 37 mins. After 1hr 17 mins nothing had happend and then just as i thought it was going to pick up it ended. The "monster" effects were only ok and the noises it makes are pretty good. One of the worst alien invasion films ever.

I really liked this film. I like the genre anyway but seen that it was cheaply made so was weary of it. But I gave it a chance and was impressed. The acting between the two main characters is great especially by the man. Rather than usual 'good guy underneath it all'..he has a bit of depth to his character. Its also easy to believe the story as it moves subtlety rather than with the usual clunky jumps. Some slight tweaking to the story and some extra special effects, and i mean slight, and it would easily have been a great 2010 film.

I agree with Carnage187, this was an awful film! Not worth the watch as absolutely nothing happens.

I was really looking forward to this movie, however my anticipation was completely unjustified, almost 2hrs 20min of waiting for something to happen that never did. The movie tension completely flat lined throughout, its like a fly on the wall documentary of a nature walk through some war torn reservation. Avoid at all costs, or go see it, but dont say i did'nt warn you.

In a word , CRAP. This has to be the worst film that was ever made, No Beginning , No Middle , No End. and No story. What a Rip off.

Very clever movie, the average poporn munching cinema-goer expecting lots of blood, gore and big special effects will be very disapointed, everything about this film has another underlying message, it reflects on us foreign policy, and border control. The appearence of the "creatures" are also symbolic throughout the movie and work as a device rather than a threat in the movie.

Not worth writing a full review for. While the production quality is impressive for the €15k budget, the film is still a slow and plodding one which only really develops the relationship between two characters using a barely-visible sci-fi subplot. Hugely disappointing effort which BORDERS on the pointless.
