Whatever you think about Harmony Korine, there's no doubting that the guy is an original. From scripting Kids when he was in his early 20s, to making his feature debut directing the disturbing Gummo, he has attracted controversy of epic proportions upon the release of almost every one of his films. Mister Lonely is apparently a much more whimsical affair, as it looks at the relationship between Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe impersonators and throws in some parachuting nuns for good measure. Coherence has never been the intention with any of Korine's films, as he has never abided by the three-act structure used by the vast majority of today's screenwriters - thus they are widely open to interpretation. Here we have the magician David Blaine, and brilliant (if slightly unhinged) German director Werner Herzog adding to an already strange cast, that includes two fine actors in Samantha Morton and Diego Luna. The few reviews that have surfaced have not been kind, but Korine's films are as far away from review-driven as you can get and the man will always have his fans - regardless of the spewings of folk such as myself. So rent Gummo, or Julien Donkey-Boy and if they float your boat, chances are that this will too.
