In Time
Director: Andrew Niccol
Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Justin Timberlake, Olivia Wilde
Details: US/109mins 12A
In a world where time is currency, no one ages past the age of 25. When someone hits said age, a countdown appears on their arm, and they have a year before they "time out" and die. Regular people live day to day, hoping to garner enough hours and minutes to keep them alive. But the rich live longer - the system essentially making them immortal.
Timberlake is a 28 year old from the ghetto, who is given over a century in currency by a wealthy, suicidal man. After the man punches his own ticket, our hero makes his way to New Greenwich - the rich part of town - and meets Amanda Seyfried's spoilt rich girl. An instant attraction soon turns to a race against time to survive.
Niccol is known for being a top screenwriter in Hollywood, and specifically one that is a dab hand with science fiction. So the fact that In Time has such a strong, interesting story should surprise few. Where it fails is the utter lack of urgency in the execution. The whole film is essentially a counting clock, so you should be on the edge of your seat from the start. But with the exception of a couple of scenes, it doesn't happen.
A hugely recognisable supporting cast also distracts somewhat; you're too busy clocking faces from hit tv shows in small roles to get unequivocally drawn into the plot. No one is particularly bad, but a cynical sort might claim that the entire set-up is a studio executive's wet dream. You have an entire cast of a film where the plot dictates that the actors must be young and attractive; so get that guy from Mad Men, or the dude from The Big Bang Theory.
Basically, In Time does not live up to its potential.

First off this is a great concept for a movie. But its total crap. The script is one of the worst of the year and for me JT just isnt good enough an actor. The pacing is non existant and there are far too many get this scene over with moments. One ridiculous scene goes as follows, the time keepers are 20 yards away outside their hiding spot. Both actors are in their undies but 30 seconds later when they are leggin it Amanda Seyfried has put on a pair of tights and high heels, to run away in. Please!! It could have been a very cool movie...

The saying that time is money takes on a whole new meaning in this sci-fi thriller from Andrew Niccol, the screenwriter of The Truman Show and the director of Gattaca. With a nod towards Logan's Run, the concept in this future society is that people die young at 26 if they can't buy or steal more time. They may stop aging at 25, but they have to keep feeding their clock like drug addicts or they die within a year. While it's a reasonably entertaining film for its just-right running time, it lacks any real depth. Some of the actors in the film are clearly over 26, but this fact is quietly brushed under the carpet. Olivia Wilde is criminally underused as well in a brief but head-scratching role. While it may be an enjoyable film, I would have expected more from Andrew Niccol. I supect that studio interference and stunt casting turned what could have been a thought-provoking film (like Gattaca) into a merely entertaining one.

I thought the film was a good idea but as it been said here Justin Timberlake is'nt a good enough actor for the part. It seemed to lack any depth. Cillian Murphy was IMO the best actor in the film and to have Matthew Bomer and Olivia Wilde play such limited roles was a mistake. Bomer and Olivia Wilde could have played the main roles and with their appeal would have made it alot more enjoyable. In the scene where justin timberlake and Amanda Seyfried are about to make out they were playing strip poker and they were running out of time was a little lame.

I agree with the above, great concept but crap acting, boring script and enough " time" lines to make you want to cry... EG " time waits for no one" " time to get outta here " etc etc ... I spent one hour of my time then walked out

I thought the idea was really well thought of only for the main actress who was not great. I thought Justin Timberlake was great although I wouldn't have thought he would be. The end was a bit too much though, all is well that ends well....
