Last seen in the beautifully understated Amelie, the expressive Audrey Tatou plays Angelique, an art student who loves cardiologist Loic (Samuel Le Bihan) to the point of obsession. Despite the fact that Loic is married and his wife is pregnant, Angelique is utterly convinced that it's only a matter of time before he leaves his wife and the pair are united. Her friends are wary of the relationship, re-enforced by the offhand fashion that Loic seems to be treating Angelique. Over time, as Loic grows more distant, Angelique's love for him grows to levels which trouble not only her but those close to her. Just as things seem to be reaching their (un)natural conclusion, the entire film is replayed, but this time it's seen through the eyes of the beleaguered Loic. Although not quite as clever as it would like to think, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not is still an eminently watchable and enjoyable thriller, offering a darkly comical contrasting look at the nature of obsession and love. It's a little bit cold in places and occasionally the narrative blurs uncomfortably but it's the director's decision to cast the elfin Tatou against type, which ensures the film has a magnetic core.
